Golden Family Getaway to Sunset Key, Florida
To celebrate my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary, our family escaped to Sunset Key, a private island just off the coast of Key West, Florida. From the moment we arrived, it felt like we had discovered a hidden slice of paradise. The island’s charming cottages, swaying palms, and crystal-blue water created the perfect backdrop for a milestone celebration that none of us will soon forget. We don’t have a chance to get together often, so this trip was super special to all of us thanks to my parents.
One of the best parts about Sunset Key is how easy it is to reach. We met my brother and his family early in Atlanta on a Tuesday morning and took a direct flight from Atlanta to Key West. Within thirty minutes of landing, we were boarding the quick ferry ride to the private island of Sunset Key. There’s something magical about stepping off the boat and instantly feeling removed from the hustle of everyday life. No long transfers, no complicated travel days, and especially no need for cars—just an effortless arrival into vacation mode and getting to catch up and enjoy as a family.
Our four nights were filled with adventure and quality family time. My mom really put in a lot of time organizing fun activities for all of us. We spent one day deep-sea fishing (technically it was my Dad, Matthew, Sarah, my brother, Todd and my nephew, Parker), where Sarah reeled in the biggest fish of all of them, an incredibly large Cobia fish. Later that evening, the talented team at Latitudes, Sunset Key’s iconic waterfront restaurant, prepared the fish for dinner. Sarah has since asked us no less than 50 times since, “What would we have eaten if I had not caught the fish for the family?” It really is so funny thinking about what a fun core memory that will be for her. Sharing a meal that had gone from ocean to table in a matter of hours made for one of the most memorable moments of the trip.
Another special memory was spending one morning on a really fun jet skiing tour of Key West, exploring the water, and soaking up the sunshine together. It was not what we were expecting, it was a lot of thrill riding at 50 mph, along with some touring and learning about Key West. Honestly, our jet ski tour guides were what made the tour so much fun and I’m more than happy to share their information if you plan on taking a trip to Sunset Key and want to do the jet ski tour. Lastly, if your family is into tennis, tennis on the last night after dinner was super fun, and highly competitive! With that said, there is so much to do. You can rest on the beach or rest by the relaxing pool, OR stay as busy and active as you want. We loved every minute of our stay on Sunset Key!
Sunset Key strikes a rare balance: it feels luxurious and exclusive, yet wonderfully family-friendly. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, planning a multigenerational trip, or simply looking for an easy getaway from Atlanta, it’s hard to imagine a better destination. Beautiful accommodations where we loved eating on the porch together one night, to unforgettable experiences, and plenty of opportunities to make memories together for mom and dad’s 50th ~ Sunset Key truly delivered all of it. Fifty years of marriage certainly deserved a special celebration, and this little island exceeded every expectation. Feel free to reach out with questions. We loved this vacation where the hotel staff was exceptional and we cannot wait to go back!
